Winter visits

Whilst many people visit in the summer, the Domaine is not far from snow capped mountains in the winter.  For the adventurous, the nearest ski slopes of the Ariege (10 Ski Stations including Ax Trois Domaines) are about 45 mins away.  Andorra is approximately 1 1/4 hours away and is a fabulous way to spend a winters day both tax free shopping and skiing.  A lot of local towns and villages hold Noel and truffle markets before Christmas and can be a great way to spend a few hours

The pyrenees

Approximately an hour away are the famous Pyrenean mountains - stretching 450kms from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean Sea. The highest peaks include the Pic du midi with must see views from the observatory accessible by cable car. Experience the hairpin bends of the famous Tour de France mountain stages or visit Europes biggest waterfall at the cirque du Gavarnie. For the less energetic ride on the Train Jaune across the Pyrenees.

The CANAL du midi

A World Heritage site stretching 241 km from Bordeaux to the Mediterranean coast, there is plenty to enjoy connected to the canal: hire a boat, cycle or walk along stretches of the canal. The Villepinte canal rest stop is only 0.7 km from the Domaine.

If you love to shop for fresh produce, you can visit a local market nearly every day of the week

  • Monday  - Mirepoix

The art gallery and museum also holds regular exhibitions.  Take a canal boat trip or simply enjoy eating and drinking in many of the cafes and restaurants in the city.

If Carcassone has left you wanting to see more,  visit other Cather castles in the area - Montsegur, Peyrepertuse, Queribus, Lastours, Saissac, Termes, Arques.   - Details of all castles in the area can be found at the Domaine.

Medieval Villages

Locally there are plenty of historic villages to while away a lazy morning or afternoon: Mirepoix, Revel, Montreal, Fanjeux, Montolieu, St Hilaire, St Papoul, Bram, and many more. Discover stories of Preist Berenger Sauniere at Rennes le Chateau.

The Mediterranean coast

Just an hour away from the domaine, you can discover the white sandy beaches of the Med coast - from Cap D'Agde through Narbonne and Perpignan, down to the charming fishing village of Coullioure.  You can relax on the beach, take in a boat trip or visit the galleries showing the artists attracted to the light on this part of the coast

Whether you are here for a short or long stay, you will find plenty to discover in the area - beautiful countryside, stunning views and a region with an intriguing past.

You can choose whether you want to see the sites, cycle or walk by the canal du midi on the GR7 European long distance route, discover the mountains or the Mediterranean beaches.  Whatever your choice, you don't have to go far to experience the Aude region at its best - here's some of our suggestions....
